State employees schedule protest

Civil servants are planning to stage a large-scale demonstration Tuesday to protest a government plan they say will jeopardize their job security.
Public school teachers, LU professors and representatives from the General Labor Confederation and political parties will take part in the protest, which will move from Barbir Square to the Grand Serail.
Protesters want the government to drop a bill to hire civil servants on a contract basis. The Cabinet recently endorsed a draft law stipulating that full-time staff in the public bureaucracy be replaced by contract workers in a bid to reduce the burden on the Treasury. The bill is currently before Parliament but has raised considerable criticism from labor unions and even government officials.
The Coordination Committee of Public School Teachers, the first group to call for the demonstration, urged staff members to show up in big numbers. Public schools and LU will be closed for the day and private school teachers will suspend classes before noon.
A statement issued by the committee said that teachers would not “watch idly,” while the government pushes ahead with its plan.
