Albania seizes assets of charities, foreigners suspected of terror links

TIRANA, May 31 (AFP) - The Albanian government said Tuesday it had seized assets belonging to four Islamic organisations, a Belgian woman and a Lebanese man suspected of having links to terrorists.

Finance ministry spokesman Alban Beqja said the organisations were Taibah International, Revival of Islamic Heritage Society, Al Haramania and Global Relief Foundation.

"The Albanian authorities in mid-March ordered the seizure of the assets and investments made in the name of these foundations or in the name of a third party," Beqja said.

"Coming to Albania in the 1990s, these foundations have hidden behind charity work to finance suspect activities or to make investments to launder their funds."

The assets of Nabil Abdyl Sayadi, 38, from Lebanon, and Patricia Rosa Vinck, 37, born in Belgium, were also seized, he said.

Beqja said they were suspected of financing terrorist groups but no other information about their assets or alleged activities were immediately available.
