| Hezbollah: US ignited
tension Beirut, , May. 29 (UPI) -- The Lebanese guerrilla organization Hezbollah Saturday accused "groups linked" to the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon of igniting tensions in Beirut. Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah also called for an investigation into the deaths of five demonstrators and the wounding of dozens others during a Thursday protest against fuel price hikes in the country. Nasrallah said "groups managed by people linked to the U.S. Embassy had brought tension to the southern district of Beirut, and we gave the names of these people to the responsible authorities." During a news conference in Beirut, he insisted on "answers," and asked "in whose interests was it to push the army into the alleys of the district" where the protest turned into a battlefield between demonstrators and the army. The Shiite leader added that, "We reject any attack on an army officer or soldier, and we strongly condemn that, as we condemn responding to stones with bullets that target the heads" of people.. |
